Different types of coffee

drinking a cortado outside

Coffee and I have a weird relationship. Like I love it. Truly I do. The entire process of brewing. The smell. The taste. The ritual of it. And good coffee is so fucking delicious. But here’s the thing I go through phases where I’m sensitive to caffeine and half-caf is good but it’s just not the same. I can get pretty anxious so having jitters is not a vibe nor is an accelerated heartbeat But I do love coffee and I drink it so let’s talk about orders because so often I’ve talked to people or found myself be like what is even in that. I’m not a coffee connoisseur so I wanted to do a little deep dive and learn about the different coffee orders and how to best have them. I mean if we’re going to drink coffee we should be drinking the best possible kind right?

☕️ Espresso: pretty much condensed black coffee (hence why it’s so strong and such a little amount) when brewing, steam is forced through the ground coffee beans. Make it the way Italians do with a side of lemon (Espresso Romano). Rub the lemon over the rim of your coffee cup or squeeze a tiny bit inside and have the half/wedge nearby you as it will bring out the aroma of the coffee (also if the coffee is bitter this is a great fix)

☕️ Latte: an espresso with steamed milk and foam on top. Almond milk is the best if you want to bring out the coffee flavour. Ask for it in a tall glass whether you’re getting it hot or iced (only applicable when dining in)

☕️ Cappuccino: espresso with steamed milk foam (usually almost equal parts of foam and milk hence different from a latte - also espresso, milk and foam are equal parts in the drink) add some chocolate or cinnamon powder on top for an extra yum. Best in the mornings (I might be biased don’t @ me)

☕️ Flat white: espresso with steamed milk. No foam and also to be served in a tall glass hot or iced. Smaller than a latte.

☕️ Americano: espresso with hot water. Great for sipping. Like a black coffee but more fragrant since it’s espresso.

☕️ Macchiato: espresso with a dollop of steamed milk and foam. Very small. if just espresso isn’t for you then this is your go to.

☕️ Cafe au lait: drip coffee and scalded milk. So basically strong coffee and really hot milk. A gentle yet sturdy kick to start your day.

☕️ Cortado: espresso with warm milk. The milk reduces the acidity. Another alternative to drinking straight-up espresso.

☕️ Red eye: espresso and drip coffee. Strong af. Best if need to power through something.

Milk alternatives

I love a plant-based milk and I want to say most people do nowadays. Like unless I’m somewhere where I know the milk is fresh, I’d rather go with a plant-based option.

Almond milk – delicious and light. Gives coffee a bit of a nutty flavour which works. imo best in cappuccinos

Soy milk – super creamy. Great for hot beverages. Moderation is your bff when it comes to soy milk as you don’t want to be consumed too much soy

Oat milk – light and has a creamy feel - best in ice coffee because I’ve noticed in hot coffee it tends to separate pretty quickly and it looks like little flakes are floating in the drink
