Up your fast food

burger king to go order

So before I get into this, let me say that I am neither an advocate nor a hater of fast food (at least the way it is right now). I grew up in places where fast food culture was either not that big or different. In Japan, for example, convenience stores have full-on food selections with warm buns at the checkout and a wall of bento boxes (lunch boxes), salads, sushi and more. And fast food places like McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy’s taste so much better abroad than they do here and overall are healthier or have healthier options, which is such a fucking shame right? So for a while when I first moved here I couldn’t eat any of it.

Then I went through a phase where I was smoking a lot of pot and dating a guy who loved that stuff so he and I would go to places like Jack in the Box, Del Taco, McDonald’s, Whataburger and Taco Bell. After we broke up I went back to not being able to eat any of it because this time I had just overeaten the stuff. The most I would eat is a Whopper once a blue moon or go to Popeyes (mainly for the sides).

Good fast food

Okay such a paradox you might think, I know. But recently the fast-food culture has finally started shifting - it’s still only shifting mainly towards providing vegetarian options and not really health consciousness but one step at a time, right? My old roommate was the one that got me onto it. She would go and get vegetarian Taco Bell options and once I went with her and tried some and kind of fell in love guys. I mean of course it’s not the best vegetarian Mexican food I’ve ever had but for the cost - it’s quite good. And my stomach feels totally fine afterwards. So I started exploring and going to fast food places and there aren’t many right now where you can hack your way around but there’s enough to where if you’re in a pinch, a fast food place will be there for you.

Healthy hacks

▼ The Taco Bell vegetarian menu (it’s oftentimes not on the drive-thru menu or even on the menu inside but it’s on their website linked here) you can basically order anything that has meat and sub black beans for it. Fucking delicious. And let’s face it, fast food like this is probably never going to be great for you but at least this way it’s not giving you a stomach ache or the fucking runs excuse my explicitness.

▼ The impossible burger from BK - I mean fucking yum. I love a good impossible patty and imo that’s one of the better non-meat alternatives to burgers so I highly recommend you try one if you haven’t already

▼ Wendys - grilled chicken sandwich without the buns, with lettuce on either side and a side of avocado. Add avocado to any salad. Get a plain baked potato and add grilled chicken and avocado to it

▼ KFC - so skip the F and if you really want chicken get the pot pie, cut the top off and eat the inside (best to split with someone or have half now and half later) or just go straight for the sides: mashed potatoes with no gravy, coleslaw and corn - mix it all up together in a bowl and you’ve got yourself a quickie meal (add greens to up the level a bit)
